Missouri Voters Repeal LGBT Anti-Discrimination Law | ThinkProgress. From comments on the article. The law now gives Christians the right to treat people as second class citizens just as Nazi Germany did with the Jews. Germany was a supposedly Christian nationa nd most of the churches went along with the Nazi’s.
It’s the religious far-right’s “special snowflake” syndrome: conservative Christians thinking that because they believe God sanctions their particular brand of bigotry, they’re special snowflakes who shouldn’t be restrained by human decency, much less the pesky laws that the rest of us are obliged to follow. If you hate hard enough, the rules don’t apply to you because you are a special snowflake, who really, really believes in what you’re doing.

Thibodeau told ThinkProgress that, since Tipping’s and Savage’s blog posts were published, the organization has received a lot of positive notes from religious people expressing their support for the work of Maine Family Planning. “Thank you for the work you do and please pay no attention to the ‘Maine Christian Civic League.’ They know very little about God,” one message read.
“The sentiment that people aren’t interested in anti-women rhetoric and discrimination in the name of religion — that definitely came across here,” Thibodeau said.
Republicans used to be moderate, business-minded civic boosters and unapologetic patriots who were the linchpins and bulwarks of small towns across the Midwest, the enthusiastic backers of projects for the civic good, usually in partnership with the town liberals (the librarian, the bar owner, a lawyer or two, the Methodist minister, the banker’s wife). These Republicans were uniters and diehard optimists and persons of compassionate conscience, inveterate doers of good deeds.Even today, there are probably some Republicans who still fit that description.
“How to Determine if Your Religious Liberty Is Being Threatened in Just 10 Quick Questions.” Just pick “A” or “B” for each question.

“Religious liberty is never secured by a campaign of religious superiority. The only way to ensure your own religious liberty remains strong is by advocating for the religious liberty of all, including those with whom you may passionately disagree. Because they deserve the same rights as you. Nothing more.
the reason most people who call themselves atheists or agnostics or spiritual seekers do so today is because they have seen the hypocrisy of traditional religions as actually practiced, and their moral values include respect for truth which does not allow them to settle for stories which pretend reality does not exist. Any Christian who really respects truth can understand and applaud that, and find a way to practice his or her faith without denying the reality of the observed universe.

“The end of democracy and the defeat of the American Revolution will occur when government falls into the hands of lending institutions and moneyed incorporations.” ~ Thomas Jefferson
Corporations, which should be the carefully restrained creatures of the law and the servants of the people, are fast becoming the people’s masters.
“In the Hobby Lobby cases, five male Justices of the Supreme Court, who are all members of the Catholic faith and who each were appointed by a President who hailed from the Republican party, decided that a huge corporation, with thousands of employees and gargantuan revenues, was a ‘person’ entitled to assert a religious objection to the Affordable Care Act’s contraception mandate because that corporation was ‘closely held’ by family members.

IN THE NAME OF RELIGION
Three years ago today a group of men flew planes into the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania.
I just can’t accept anything if I don’t understand it; at least in as much detail as I’m capable of understanding. A fact is only a fact if it can be independently verified.
From the Huffington Post (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/17/pastor-suit-against-oklahoma-license-plate-ok_n_3455129.html) ‘Rain God’ Oklahoma License Plate: Pastor Keith Cressman Lawsuit Approved By 10th Circuit Court Of Appeals.
I wonder if this pastor would support a similar law suit over the act of the McCarthy era Congress law that inserted “under God” into the Pledge of Allegiance or the printing of “In God we trust” on all our money?
Just saw a news report that North Dakota has passed a law that proclaims that life begins at conception. They’re wrong. Eggs are already alive. Sperm are already alive. Everyone agrees that life “began” long ago (whether you believe in evolution or not.) It’s never ended. What they are trying to say is that a new human being comes into existence at conception. I guess they will be issuing “Conception Certificates” instead of “Birth Certificates” now. So all conceptions will have to be reported to the state and recorded.
What we need now is a ban on the sale and possession of weapons that are only good for mass murder. You don’t need a 50 caliber machine gun or a rifle that can fire 100 bullets a minute to hunt ducks or deer. If you do, you should give up hunting.
Jefferson had no use for religious leaders and many times in his letters made it clear religion should be a private affair and and be kept out of politics and that the only way to know a person’s true religious beliefs was by how they lived, not by what they said.
“… the priests indeed have heretofore thought proper to ascribe to me religious, or rather anti-religious sentiments, of their own fabric, but such as soothed their resentments against … religious freedom. They wished him to be thought atheist, deist, or devil, who could advocate freedom from their religious dictations.
What an effort, my dear Sir, of bigotry in Politics & Religion have we gone through! The barbarians really flattered themselves they should be able to bring back the times of Vandalism, when ignorance put everything into the hands of power & priestcraft. All advances in science were proscribed as innovations. They pretended to praise and encourage education, but it was to be the education of our ancestors.
“… The Gothic idea that we are to look backwards instead of forwards for the improvement of the human mind, and to recur to the annals of our ancestors for what is most perfect in government, in religion & in learning, is worthy of those bigots in religion & government, by whom it has been recommended, & whose purposes it would answer.
“… I am for freedom of religion, & against all maneuvres to bring about a legal ascendancy of one sect over another: for freedom of the press, & against all violations of the constitution to silence by force & not by reason the complaints or criticisms, just or unjust, of our citizens against the conduct of their agents.
There are 2 kinds of people in the world:
One type are those who believe that the only purpose, the only reason, the only goal in life is the pursuite of the all-mighty dollar and that the only meaningful measure of success is the dollar and how much of it one can accumulate durring their lifetime.
The other type are those who believe that the purpose, the reason, the goal in life is to make life better and that the true measure of success is is wheather ones time on this earth has made it a better place to
I discovered this and bought the album way back in the ’60s.
I still have the album but hadn’t heard it in a long time until I discovered it on Youtube.
Good, Bad: Right, Wrong: Justified, Unjustified: Justice, Injustice: Evil.
Good is that which produces happiness, joy, pleasure, comfort, health, ease, knowledge, understanding, love, empathy, etc.
Bad is that which produces sadness, depression, stress, pain, sickness, ignorance, intolerance, hatred, anger, animosity, poverty, prejudice, persecution, etc.
Right is that which results in Good.
Wrong is that which results in Bad.
Justified is that which is Right or that results in both Good and Bad but the Good outweighs the Bad.
Unjustified is that which is Wrong or that results in both Good and Bad but the Bad outweighs the Good.
James Madison’s draft of the Bill of Rights was prepared and introduced shortly after the First Congress convened in 1789.
“The Preamble to The Bill of Rights
Congress of the United States
begun and held at the City of New-York, on Wednesday the fourth of March, one thousand seven hundred and eighty nine.
THE Conventions of a number of the States, having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added: And as extending
All these people who keep yelling about the Constitution and how it’s being violated by the government and keep insisting that “This is a Christian country.” and claiming the government is carrying on a “War on religion” need to read it.
Here’s a link to the constitution.
And here’s what the 1st amendment actually says:
¨Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press;
I checked the preamble to the Constitution and guess what? It starts with the words “We the people.” It does not begin with we the hospitals, schools, day care centers, soup kitchens, or any other institution … not even churches! The first amendment guarantees freedom of religion to “We the people” it does not guarantee freedom of religion to hospitals, schools, day care centers, soup kitchens, or any other institution … not even churches!
I was reading an article in the Wikipedia on Jewish philosophy at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_philosophy and the section far down the page at:
Traditionalist attitudes towards philosophy
which reads: Haredi traditionalists who emerged in reaction to the Haskalah considered the fusion of religion and philosophy as difficult because classical philosophers start with no preconditions for which conclusions they must reach in their investigation, while classical religious believers have a set of religious principles of faith that they hold one must believe. Most Haredim contended that one cannot simultaneously be a philosopher and a true adherent of a revealed religion.
Michele Bachmann seems to be missing a great opportunity in her battle for the Republican Presidential nomination. If she can call the earth quake and hurricane Irene God’s vengeance for us electing Obama President she should be calling the Texas fires God’s vengeance for electing Rick Perry Governor.
I was wondering how long it would take for some religious fanatic to say it. “I don’t know how much God has to do…. We’ve had an earthquake; we’ve had a hurricane. He said, ‘Are you going to start listening to me here?'” I thought it would be some Islamic fundamentalist saying it was God’s punishment for us killing Bin Laden. It wasn’t it was a fundamentalist of another persuasion …
