by 2020, the annual cost of medical care for seniors who fall is expected to reach $54.9 billion. Paul touted the “nobility of private charity” that’s the kind of philosophy that results in us spending about twice as much per person on health care as any other country on earth.
It is economic incentive that drives enterprise, not the supposed nobility of spirit of the wealthy. That idea is aristocracy. Our nation is founded on the self-evident truth that aristocracy is a lie, and that powerful elites do not share their money, power, and privilege with the people. We now have a new aristocracy, created by transferring literally trillions of dollars in wealth to the wealthiest people in our society
The problem in defining the middle class with an income or wealth ranking is its ambiguity. if we define the middle class as families between the 25th and 75th percentiles, how different are families at the 24th than those at the 25th or the 76th from those at the 75th percentiles? How different are those at the 25th than those at the 75th?
There was never any evidence to support strong supply-side claims about the marvels of tax cuts and the horrors of tax increases; even freshwater macroeconomists, despite their willingness to believe foolish things, never went down that road.
Since the 1970s there have been four big changes in the effective tax rate on the top 1 percent: the Reagan cut, the Clinton hike, the Bush cut, and the Obama hike. they predicted dire effects from the Clinton hike; instead we had a boom that eclipsed Reagan’s.
It’s the religious far-right’s “special snowflake” syndrome: conservative Christians thinking that because they believe God sanctions their particular brand of bigotry, they’re special snowflakes who shouldn’t be restrained by human decency, much less the pesky laws that the rest of us are obliged to follow. If you hate hard enough, the rules don’t apply to you because you are a special snowflake, who really, really believes in what you’re doing.
“Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat, but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.” John Steinbeck
Business is about making a profit. To be successful, i.e. to make a profit, a business must receive more for the product or service provided than it cost to produce it. That cost includes every expense that must be incurred to produce the product or service. If the price doesn’t cover the cost AND provide a sufficient excess, the business will die.

IN THE NAME OF RELIGION
Three years ago today a group of men flew planes into the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania.
Just saw a news report that North Dakota has passed a law that proclaims that life begins at conception. They’re wrong. Eggs are already alive. Sperm are already alive. Everyone agrees that life “began” long ago (whether you believe in evolution or not.) It’s never ended. What they are trying to say is that a new human being comes into existence at conception. I guess they will be issuing “Conception Certificates” instead of “Birth Certificates” now. So all conceptions will have to be reported to the state and recorded.
What we need now is a ban on the sale and possession of weapons that are only good for mass murder. You don’t need a 50 caliber machine gun or a rifle that can fire 100 bullets a minute to hunt ducks or deer. If you do, you should give up hunting.
Thomas Jefferson to Samuel Kercheval, July 12, 1816
Some men look at constitutions with sanctimonious reverence, and deem them like the arc of the covenant, too sacred to be touched. They ascribe to the men of the preceding age a wisdom more than human, and suppose what they did to be beyond amendment. I knew that age well; I belonged to it, and labored with it. It deserved well of its country.
“… I am for freedom of religion, & against all maneuvres to bring about a legal ascendancy of one sect over another: for freedom of the press, & against all violations of the constitution to silence by force & not by reason the complaints or criticisms, just or unjust, of our citizens against the conduct of their agents.
There are 2 kinds of people in the world:
One type are those who believe that the only purpose, the only reason, the only goal in life is the pursuite of the all-mighty dollar and that the only meaningful measure of success is the dollar and how much of it one can accumulate durring their lifetime.
The other type are those who believe that the purpose, the reason, the goal in life is to make life better and that the true measure of success is is wheather ones time on this earth has made it a better place to
One of the favorite “buzzwords” the politicians keep using is “middle class.” Do you know who Romney or Obama are talking about when they use it? I don’t. It would be helpful if they would tell us who they mean when they say “the middle class.” I suspect they are not talking about the same people.
My curiosity got the better of me and I did a Google search to see what I could find. I got 510,000,000 results. I looked at a few.
Obama said it best when he said we are all in this together. It’s not about income redistribution, its about income fairness.

Economists say Republican Jobs Bills won’t Actually Create Jobs. They are narrowly targeted and are really special interest driven. Jobs are a second or third-order effect, not the main priority of the bills in the package.
At the heart of the GOP jobs package is a push for rolling back regulations … gutting environmental laws that regulate clean air and water … (ie.
Hypocrisy: a feigning to be what one is not or to believe what one does not; especially: the false assumption of an appearance of virtue or religion
It is not simply failing to practice those virtues that one preaches, it is the state of pretending to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that one does not actually have. Hypocrisy involves the deception of others and is thus a kind of lie.
“The only vice which cannot be forgiven is hypocrisy.
I was reading an article in the Wikipedia on Jewish philosophy at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_philosophy and the section far down the page at:
Traditionalist attitudes towards philosophy
which reads: Haredi traditionalists who emerged in reaction to the Haskalah considered the fusion of religion and philosophy as difficult because classical philosophers start with no preconditions for which conclusions they must reach in their investigation, while classical religious believers have a set of religious principles of faith that they hold one must believe. Most Haredim contended that one cannot simultaneously be a philosopher and a true adherent of a revealed religion.
My father, a fundamentalist Baptist Minister, opposed, (no he was actually angered), by public events that included pray. He based his opinion of such acts on the verses which you can check out here: http://bible.cc/matthew/6-5.htm and here http://bible.cc/matthew/6-6.htm and here http://bible.cc/mark/12-17.htm and here http://bible.cc/john/9-31.htm. He agreed with Billy Graham that what these verses made abundantly clear was that ” Sin erects a barrier between us and God.
This is a condensed summary of what Fundamentalist Christians believe.
There is only one God.
God is a Spirit. (That is he has no physical or material existence. [Unless he chooses to have one like when he “… became flesh and dwelt among us.”])
God is omniscient (all knowing [although he sometimes asks questions like “…

Anyway, set me to thinking about food. My first memory of food is from when I was about 5 years old and my sister joyce (she would have been about 12) made me toast and hot cocoa morning. I couldn’t believe how wonderful it tasted. I can still remember the taste perfectly.
My reaction to the elections is a bit delayed. I guess I’m still a little in shock. Needless to say I did not expect the outcome. When I discussed it with Professor Levine at UT and he predicted a 50 seat loss in the house. I REALLY thought that was impossible, I told him maybe 30 seats. WOW was I wrong! So, Renan, you were right and I was wrong.
I still don’t believe the American people have actually bought-in to the Tea Party agenda.
I have had Thomas L. Thompson’s Mythic Past Biblical Archaeology and the Myth of Israel on my book shelf for years and finally got around to reading it a few months ago. Dr. Thompson rejects the generally accepted idea that the Israelites arrived in Biblical Israel as invaders of an already existing civilization, conquered and replaced it. (A stand that caused him much opposition in his field and was detrimental to his career.) Thompson basically asserts a gradual evolution of already existing cultural elements.
Suppose you wanted to have a conversation about God with someone. If there is to be any communication you’ll have to both mean the same thing by the words you use. The most important word in such a conversation will be God, and at least some minimal assumptions of what God is have to be made to have the conversation.
It occurred to me today that the Obama campaign is failing to address a very big concern of the voters. The voters of the country have lost all faith in government. His ideas and plans and policies are right but voters are not hearing from him what they are hearing form the other side and that is what is making them support McCain. McCain is constantly hammering home the idea that Washington is out of touch, Washington is corrupt, Washington is the cause of the country’s problems, Washington is the enemy of the people.
