Ted Cruz recuses self on anything before 1970

[Q]: A third Texas president, L.B.J., created Medicare in the mid-’60s. Your hero Ronald Reagan campaigned vigorously against that, saying it would lead to socialized medicine, would end liberty in the United States. Who was right: L.B.J. or Reagan?
[Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz]: It’s not worth tilting at windmills. I don’t know. I wasn’t alive then.
Who was right? Who’s to say? That was in the before-times. I have no opinions on the before-times.

Tom Cotton: Bombing Iran would take just days

In short, Tom Cotton, 2015: “Several days air and naval bombing … “
Donald Rumsfeld, 2003, on the prospect of war with Iraq: “It could last six days, six weeks. I doubt six months.”
Uh-huh. About that …
If the war in Iraq had ended after the six months that Rumsfeld thought was so unlikely, maybe Cotton could fool Americans into thinking that bombing Iran now wouldn’t have broader implications.

The “Special Snowflake”

It’s the religious far-right’s “special snowflake” syndrome: conservative Christians thinking that because they believe God sanctions their particular brand of bigotry, they’re special snowflakes who shouldn’t be restrained by human decency, much less the pesky laws that the rest of us are obliged to follow. If you hate hard enough, the rules don’t apply to you because you are a special snowflake, who really, really believes in what you’re doing.

People who call themselves atheists or agnostics

the reason most people who call themselves atheists or agnostics or spiritual seekers do so today is because they have seen the hypocrisy of traditional religions as actually practiced, and their moral values include respect for truth which does not allow them to settle for stories which pretend reality does not exist.  Any Christian who really respects truth can understand and applaud that, and find a way to practice his or her faith without denying the reality of the observed universe.

Deterring an Iranian Nuclear Breakout

Those like Mr. Netanyahu who have opposed any agreement except on terms that cannot be realized should not engage in wishful thinking about the likelihood of such alternative approaches succeeding. They should be clear-eyed in comparing these alternatives with the kind of agreement that can be realized. Of course, if Iran is not prepared to accept a reasonable deal, the United States would have little choice but to turn to nondiplomatic approaches.

IN THE NAME OF RELIGION

IN THE NAME OF RELIGION

Three years ago today a group of men flew planes into the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania.
Why? Religion.

Thomas Jefferson on intellectual property

If nature has made any one thing less susceptible than all others of exclusive property, it is the action of the thinking power called an idea, which an individual may exclusively possess as long as he keeps it to himself; but the moment it is divulged, it forces itself into the possession of every one, and the receiver cannot dispossess himself of it. Its peculiar character, too, is that no one possesses the less, because every other possesses the whole of it. He who receives an idea from me, receives …

Optimism

Perhaps the future is not as bleak as it appears.  I started thinking about what happened in this election year and remembering some things that may have been glimpses of reality that went unnoticed.

Food Memories

We watched Julie and Julia the other night.  (Weren’t going too. We were just going to see what it was about.  Three hours later we had watched the whole thing.  It was ok.
Anyway, set me to thinking about food.  My first memory of food is from when I was about 5 years old and my sister joyce (she would have been about 12) made me toast and hot cocoa morning. I couldn’t believe how wonderful it tasted.  I can still remember the taste perfectly.

GOD

Suppose you wanted to have a conversation about God with someone. If there is to be any communication you’ll have to both mean the same thing by the words you use. The most important word in such a conversation will be God, and at least some minimal assumptions of what God is have to be made to have the conversation.
